Crime: Fratricide. Fai is under the false impression that he made a choice that killed his twin brother, Fai. As a result, he's assumed his twin's identity as a means of keeping him alive and is working as a mole for the mastermind of Tsubasa to make his wish of bringing him back come to fruition. A crime such as fratricide would make him confront all of this head-on, and is something I'd like to explore!
Background: here, and another page with additional information
Personality:
Fai initially comes across as someone who is incredibly friendly and cheerful. He puts forth effort into always looking cheerful and keeping his attitude bright, which includes always smiling, making it easy for him to get along with others without a problem. He's always quick to introduce himself and seems to really enjoy extra attention, happily basking in it. He also plays around and finds ways to have fun, usually at the expense of one of his more grumpy traveling companions. Despite how friendly he is, Fai is careful when it comes to giving away information that concerns himself.
He is also incredibly laid back, as most things don't seem to faze Fai, which is evident in the way his smile tends to stay on even in dangerous situations. For example, in Piffle, he didn't seem at all bothered when his car crashed during a race, diving into the water and having the potential to seriously injure him. He just laughed it off, which is something he does fairly often.
This laid back and friendly attitude, however, is mostly a front to keep people from trying to get close to him. Rather than being sincere, his smiles are often a way to protect himself and give off the impression that nothing is wrong. If nothing is wrong, then no one can ask him about it and get close to him. Behind those smiles, Fai feels a lot of self-loathing and fear towards other people caring about him and getting to know him. Due to his traumatic past, he's convinced that anyone who gets close to him is inviting disaster upon themselves, so it's easier for him to simply keep up the façade to push people away. Fai is also the mole in their traveling group, trying to get them to follow a grand plan to break the rules of the universe and bring someone back to life, which casts doubt on everything he does for them. However, the longer he travels with everyone, the more his resolve to follow this plan weakens. To cover up his doubts, Fai continues to lie to everyone else about his intentions and to himself, by believing he can continue to follow this plan.
Fai also lies about his magic and how powerful he really is, only giving vague and avoidant answers when he's asked about it, especially after demonstrating his ability to sense magic in Recort.
All of this culmilnates into one of Fai's major flaws, which is that he is incredibly avoidant. Rather than confront any problems either with someone else or within himself, Fai prefers to avoid it. At the beginning of Tsubasa, Fai begins his journey because a monster he promised to kill many years ago turned out to be his guardian, which he deals with this by running as far away as he possibly can so he never has to actually confront him.
Fai also uses his smile as a tool for avoidance, constantly smiling as a way to mask any insecurities or sadness he might feel. This makes it easier to avoid any questions about how he's doing, thus bringing up questions about his past. He is haunted by his past and unable to move on from it, so he goes to great lengths to avoid ever talking about it. He even tries to avoid serious conversations, which he often does with Kurogane, as he’s not afraid to directly confront Fai about his past or his motives for coming along on the journey. Although these things are topics Kurogane brings up often, Fai is unwilling to answer and tries his best to run away from those conversations. He's careful to avoid ever bringing up his past or anything especially personal, even after Kurogane says his past doesn't matter. Due to his inability to move forward, what Kurogane says doesn't matter and so Fai continues to avoid it.
Despite the great lengths he goes to avoid his problems and keep his distance, Fai can't help but give into the kindness that is an integral part of his personality. He finds himself looking after his younger traveling companions, Syaoran and Sakura, always quick to give them advice, encourage them, and protect them despite his tendency to want to keep himself distant. This aspect of his personality overpowers that desire to keep others at a distance, and the longer he travels with them, the harder it is for him to ignore that side of himself. His instinct to take care of his companions kicks in without him even realizing it, to the point that Kurogane comments that Fai has changed after they have visited several worlds together. Unfortunately, Fai sees this kindness as a weakness preventing him from keeping his distance from everyone else.
Abilities:
Fai is an incredibly powerful magician that conjures spells by writing words in the air. A few of the things he can do are:
Magic blasts - Firing blasts of just pure magic or manipulate magical energy into things like arrows
Barriers - Shields of varying size that absorb magic and physical attacks
Dimensional travel - Although it takes a lot of energy, Fai can travel to other worlds of his choosing, something that should technically use up all of a magician's power, but seems to have had no impact on Fai
Sensing magic - He can sense where magic is used, when it was used, and what kind of spell it was
Heightened endurance - His magic allows Fai to survive things a regular human would not and walk away relatively unscathed, such as being slammed into a brick wall only giving Fai a twisted ankle
Slowed aging - His magic has slowed down his aging process, making him much older than he appears
Other assorted spells - Fai can disintegrate things, see through someone else's eyes, and create a small summoning portal in the palm of someone's hand to summon their weapon
Fai is also skilled in combat, as he’s agile and able to easily dodge many attacks that come his way. He is also skilled in archery, moving up the ranks of an army in one world in a matter of months.
While not necessarily an ability, he has two curses related to his magic, one of which will force him to kill the first person he comes across with more magical power than him. His other curse will activate if anyone dies in the world of Celes, setting up a spell that will destroy the world while using him as an anchor for said spell and preventing him from making any sort of escape.
Inventory: Just the clothes on his back!
Samples: one, two
Questions: Fai's magic is rather vague and mostly characterized as just very, very powerful. I assume his curse will be suppressed while he is in-game, as it could cause a lot of disruption, given the nature of it! I also assume his ability for inter-dimensional travel would not work here either. Feel free to nerf Fai's other abilities as would best suit the game!
